The lab is interested in cognitive dysfunction following traumatic brain injury (TBI). This is a major problem that affects millions of people annually worldwide. To study this, we employ the controlled cortical impact model of TBI over the frontal cortex, a method of inducing focal brain injury. We then assess rats using established behavioral paradigms such as the five-choice serial reaction time task to determine the extent of impairments on measures such as attention and impulsivity. Ultimately, we will be using this paradigm to assess the effects of therapeutic agents with the hope of eventually treating humans suffering from TBI.
